Nell is an ecological sound artist, composer, educator, and researcher. Her current practice explores different states of being and inter-relationship in the environment. In 2021, she performed her durational piece, ‘Sound Field: Distanced, Together’ at Cheeseburn Sculpture Garden in Northumberland and presented ‘Sonic Allotments’ for the Sonic Arts Week festival in NE England. Other recent pieces include ‘Movements in Soil’ at Iklectik, London and ‘Sonic Stories from East Suffolk’. Her next commission is ‘Untold Stories’ for East Durham Create. She is co-director of Sonic Arts Week, 2022.
As a composer, Nell has made work with artists such as choreographer Hofesh Shechter (Barbican, Royal Opera House, Sadlers Wells), theatre director Lucy Bailey (international) and poet Kae Tempest (London BAC, Edinburgh Fringe). As violinist, she has worked for three decades with Brian Eno (solo albums, John Cale, U2, Drawn From Life), and performed with artists including Nigel Kennedy, Palestinian band Sabreen, Jocelyn Pook, and Fred Frith. She was a member of indie psychedelic band, The Lea Shores (supporting Kasabian, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Paul Weller).
As Masters Course Leader at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Nell developed experimental curatorial project, Unfinished with Jan Hendrickse and co-directs music/visual arts project, MAP/making with Sophie Clements (Royal College of Art).
Nell co-founded and toured internationally with music theatre company, the gogmagogs (1995 - 2007).
