Abstract

Haydock Library was reimagined as a public library designed to support children, young people and adults with SEND through sensory-informed and community-led design.

Developed through extensive workshops with local communities, carers, library staff and disability organisations, the project embeds accessibility directly into the architecture and atmosphere of the building itself. Based on wellbeing led design principals, the design creates an immersive library, with bespoke shelving, tactile materials, quiet and social spaces, to help user regulation and create a sense of belonging with the goal to widen access and inclusiveness.
