Constructing Performance Scenarios: Exploring the Action, Ensemble and Arena Spaces of Performed Music, Through Composition.

Research output: Types of ThesisDoctoral Thesis

Abstract

This research includes seven pieces, five musical studies and a written commentary created in order to explore the different interlocking and dynamic types of space present in performed music, through composition. The research considers the relationships between sounds; performer’s physical actions, spaces and spatial placements, in order to (1) generate alternative listening and viewing perspectives for audiences, and (2) identify alternative methods for generating and developing musical ideas, beyond sounds.
The approach taken in the research begins with imagined performance scenarios that are developed, refined and realised as performances, through experimentation and collaboration with performers and audiences. The overarching concept and construction of the performance scenario framing this enquiry, is built out of three types of space: Action Space is the space of the performer and their instrument, Ensemble Space is the inter-subjective, interactive space between performers, and Arena Space is the entire public space of the performance, and includes the audience. These different spaces are explored in order to uncover new approaches to using spatial placement and physical action in composition including (1) the applied use of Carnal Musicology as a compositional tool, and (2) the use of bone-conduction technology to create multi-layered, immersive listening environments.
The creative portfolio and commentary draws together two separate threads of research and activity in composition – space as a compositional parameter, and physical action as a compositional parameter. It also examines practical and logistical issues that arise when working with performers in varied spatial placements.
