Abstract

Dalla Casa's work is very well known among performers of late 16th and early 17th century music; however, many aspects of his method have been incompletely, or incorrectly, understood, either due to imperfect translation or a failure to reproduce his pedagogical presentation. Existing English translations of this work are problematic, with a number of significant errors. Septenary’s edition uniquely presents the musical examples in the same way as the author, making the author's precise pedagogical approach available to the modern reader. Translations of the madrigal texts, with extensive footnotes explaining the more obscure literary and political references, are also included, giving the reader a wider insught into the cultural mileu in which these works emerged.
