Abstract

Outdoor Symphony for massed French horns, percussion, 12 gramophones and electronics, performed twice over a square mile of forest in Kent with a nonet and a trio composed for performance in Wigmore Hall.
Premiered in King’s Wood, Challock Kent and Wigmore Hall by Richard Watkins, David Alberman and Huw Watkins and (for the symphony) students from Guildhall, RNCM, Chethams School of Music, and schools in London and Kent Commissioned by Stour Valley Arts and Wigmore Hall.

RESEARCH AREA: composing with landscape; acoustics of the open air; dialogue between acoustic and electronic elements; composing for horns; antiphony; unorthodox ensembles; transferring musical material from huge outdoor formats to small chamber formats; composing for large spaces.
