Abstract
For Chamber Ensemble with Fixed Media. Commissioned by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group in collaboration with MU arts with the support of Arts Council England and BCMG Sound Investment Scheme.
In 2023 Stephan Meier approached me to write a commission for Birmingham Contemporary Music Group that was inspired by or somehow re-imagined the art of Japanese Noh Theatre in a contemporary classical context.
NOH TRIPTYCH is my attempt to create a composition that shares a window into my experiences of learning about, and exploring the art of Noh Theatre. While the aesthetic is quite different to Noh, the aim was to instead share the results of the process of intersection between my creative practice and this art form utilising different types of voice over and lecture format pieces.
The project incorporated international knowledge exchange including a trip to Japan in December 2023 to study Noh Theatre: Studying the shoulder drum with world-leading Kotsuzumi player Narita Tatsushi and performing alongside a Noh Theatre group at the end of the week. An exploration of the wider philosophy, history and theory of Noh with Akiko Yanagisawa and composer and researcher Daryl Jamieson. Attending several Noh performances at various venues across Tokyo. This research trip was funded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Arts Council Tokyo, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, and Daiwa Foundation.
Noh Remimagined New Music - Kings Place - Public talk on the work 22/06/2024
World Premiere: CBSO Centre, BCMG, 23/06/2024
BBC Broadcast - Kate Molleson, New Music Show 12/07/2024
