Abstract
Public performances in Inverness Cathedral and Strathpeffer Pavilion. Mahler Players to be conducted by Thomas Leakey and Anthony Negus.
Wagner’s most ambitious late piano work is unsatisfactory as piano music but the material is packed with potential for orchestral realisation (it is essentially a sketch for an orchestral piece which he never bothered to realise).
RESEARCH AREAS: critique of standard repertoire; orchestrating piano music; Wagner’s use of sonority; emulating Wagner’s chamber-orchestral style; composition as historical reconstruction/elaboration.
