Rebel Rebel - Soheila Sokhanvari Soundscape: Barbican Curve Installation

Rebel Rebel is a sound installation developed in collaboration with visual artist Soheila Sokhanvari for the Barbican Centre’s Curve Gallery. The installation brings together digitally restored and creatively recomposed archival audio, including banned music, film dialogue, and poetry by pre-revolutionary Iranian feminist artists. These materials were carefully treated to improve clarity while retaining their original sonic character and historical presence. Designed in response to the Curve’s long, reverberant architecture, the installation used a unified multi-speaker spatial arrangement and gradually intensified sound to guide visitors through the exhibition. Through this immersive sonic environment, Rebel Rebel created an emotional and reflective encounter with historically suppressed feminist voices.
