Song of Freedom

These program notes accompany the Glyndebourne Festival production of Die Entführung aus dem Serail. They highlight Blonde as the opera’s clearest voice of freedom, shaped by Enlightenment ideals of female autonomy and equality. While the libretto casts her as a comic figure, Mozart’s music restores her intellectual authority, presenting freedom as independence in thought, education, and love.
